The Russian Toy Terrier Dog Breed

The Russian toy terrier is known as the “Russkiy toy breed.” The new breed is available in two coat variations, and both the long and smooth coats are lovely. This little toy breed only weighs up to seven pounds. The Russkiy is one of the smallest breeds in the world.

The Russian Toy Terrier Breed Overview

This breed is small, but surely not sensitive! The Russian toy is a little dog with a huge personality. The moniker widely used for this breed is the “Russkiy toy,” and the little dog developed from English toy terriers. The toy breed is an active and enthusiastic dog noted for loving his family.

Origin and history.

The Russian toy is a new dog breed established in Russia in the mid-twentieth century based on the little English toy terrier. The English toy terriers were initially brought to Russia in the eighteenth century to satiate the aristocracy’s love for the English way of life. This breed fell in numbers during the Communist revolution of 1917. Only a few miniature breeds survived, and their descendants were known as the smooth-haired Russian toy.

Temperament

The Russkiy toy terrier is a charming companion animal. This breed enjoys running through the backyard or lying on a family member’s lap. His huge personality and petite physique also suited him for therapy work.

Two Coat Varieties

The Russian Toy is available in two coat types. The smooth coat is close-lying and delicate to the touch, akin to the Manchester terrier. When grown, the long coat bears silky feathers on the ears. Both variants of the breed are designated Russian Toys under the American Kennel Club (AKC) breed standard and are displayed together.

Grooming

Grooming either the smooth or long coat is easy. Pet parents need to clean off the silky coat every day with a soft brush to remove dead hair. Use a soft-bristle brush every day on the long coat and comb out the feathering on the ears, legs, and tail. Trim the hair between the paw pads, too, to keep them clean.

Health Conditions

This breed is generally healthy. There are a few health conditions that pet parents need to know about and address with a trustworthy breeder.

Deciduous teeth

Patellar luxation

Bone fractures

Caring for Your Senior Russian Toy

All older small breeds need to visit the vet at least twice a year for wellness checks. This small terrier’s lifespan is nearly 12 years! If you want to keep your aged Russian toy healthy and happy, you may require nutrients or pain medicine for any achy joints.

The Russian Toy is a tiny, feisty breed.

The Russian toy breed is a charming dog with a huge personality despite his diminutive stature. Any pet parent interested in living with a tiny terrier may love this breed.
